Scotlands Film Locations


We have all watched an exciting films with stunning or spectacular locations and wonder where it was filmed and could we go to visit, whether its James Bond saving the girl and the world while speeding through the city or the countryside then facing the villian and winning again, or a Highland Hero swinging his claymore against the English ending with our Scottish hero becoming king. We all know Harry Potter© and his magical adventures, travelling from King Cross Station London to Hogwarts onboard the Hogwarts Express steam train which in fact is the Jacobite Steam Train on the Glenfinnan Railway between Mallaig and Inverness. Scotland is full of film locations. William Wallace story told by Mel Gibson while most of the film was filmed over in Ireland there was still and rightly so, scenes filmed in Scotland. For those of you who remember the Frenchman Christopher Lambert playing the every lasting Highlander and the 'Spanish Peacock' (as the Highlander called him) played by one of Scotland best know actors and the best Bond ever Sean Connery, Bond was not only born in Scotland he took part in the destruction of his childhood and ancesterol home of Skyfall, which we find out in ' On Her Majesty's Secret Service thats in Glen Coe A total of six locations in Scotland where Bond scenes where filmed, you may have thought Bond were escaping villians on the lakes in Turkey in fact he is on a Loch.
How about Zombies running about George Square in Glasgow for one of the newest of great Zombie films. Loch Ness the timeless childrens film which chose one of Scotlands iconic castles and mentioning Scotlands castles many have been chosen if not to be seen on film but been and inspiration for animated films such as the award winning Brave.

Hogwarts SpecialWe have to start the magical tour with the Glenfinnan Railway which was the railway we see the train that takes Harry Potter© and his friends to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The Glenfinnan Viaduct is a railway viaduct on the West Highland Line in Glenfinnan, Inverness-shire, Scotland. Located at the top of Loch Shiel in the West Highlands of Scotland, the viaduct overlooks the Glenfinnan Monument and the waters of Loch Shiel. Completed in 1901 the viaduct was the first structure in the world to use at that time the new building material Mass Concrete. Over 100 feet in height and made up of 21 arches this viaduct is a beautiful piece of engineering. The Jacobite is the name of the steam train in Harry Potter and you can travel on it, described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis More Information visit the website
